Factors that affect the performance of above-ground HDPE piping systems and thus their design include:

Temperature:

For pressure piping systems, the operating temperature range of HDPE pipes is generally limited to -40°C to 50°C. Higher temperatures are acceptable for non-pressure systems. Consult the manufacturer for product-specific data.

Note that the linear thermal expansion coefficient of HDPE pipes is approximately 10 times that of metal pipes, meaning they experience substantial thermal expansion and contraction from temperature fluctuations, which must be accounted for in design. A typical rule of thumb is that HDPE pipe expands or contracts by 0.2 millimetres per metre of pipe length for every 1°C rise or fall in temperature.

Potential mechanical impact or loading: Additional protection must be provided if HDPE pipes are installed in areas with heavy traffic or high risk of mechanical damage.

 

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation:

To resist the effects of UV radiation, black HDPE pipes containing a minimum of 2% carbon black shall be selected.
